An elevated coolant temperature alarm in a diesel generator set is a serious condition that requires immediate investigation to prevent engine damage. Systematic Analysis of Cooling System Failures:

1. Coolant Issues: Incorrect Type, Level, or Condition

  • Cause: The use of non-recommended coolant, a mixture with incorrect water-to-coolant ratios, or simply low coolant volume drastically reduces heat transfer efficiency and boiling point.

  • Diagnosis: Check the coolant level in the expansion tank when the engine is cool. Inspect the coolant's condition; it should be clean and free of oil contamination or excessive rust. EMEAN POWER recommends using a quality inhibited ethylene-glycol mixture as specified in your generator's manual.

2. Radiator Blockage or Airflow Restriction

  • Cause: This is a prevalent issue. The radiator fins can become blocked by dust, dirt, leaves, or—in industrial environments—an oily grime. This coating acts as a thermal insulator, severely impeding heat dissipation. Bent fins also reduce airflow.

  • Diagnosis: Visually inspect the radiator core. Clean it thoroughly using low-pressure air or water (from the fan side out), taking care not to damage the fins. Ensure there are no obstructions around the generator enclosure that restrict airflow.

3. Faulty Temperature Sensor or Gauge

  • Cause: A false alarm can be triggered by a malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor, poor electrical connections, or a defective gauge/controller display.

  • Diagnosis: To verify, use a reliable infrared thermometer or a contact thermometer to measure the temperature at the sensor housing and upper radiator hose. Compare this reading with the gauge or controller display. A significant discrepancy indicates an instrument or sensor fault.

4. Additional Common Culprits to Investigate

  • Thermostat Failure: A stuck-closed thermostat prevents coolant from circulating to the radiator.

  • Coolant Pump Failure: A worn impeller or failed pump prevents adequate coolant flow.

  • Fan Drive Malfunction: A faulty fan clutch (on belt-driven fans) or hydraulic fan motor prevents sufficient airspeed across the radiator, especially under load.

  • Engine Overload: Operating beyond the generator's rated capacity for extended periods generates excess heat that the cooling system cannot reject.
